About our Ingredients:
In formulating our products we believe we have chosen the safest and most effective ingredients available on the market today. We also believe in full disclosure so listed is a recap of the ingredients used in each formulation. All of our ingredients are considered “All Natural” with the exception of our preservative (less than 1%) found in some of our cleaners and our dish & hand soaps.
About our preservative:
In formulating the Begley’s line it was our primary goal to develop the safest and most environmentally responsible products available on the market today. In order to guarantee quality, several of our formulations require a preservative.
We chose Phenoxyethanol as our preservative for several reasons:
- Phenoxyethanol occurs naturally in roses but in not enough quantity to be used for commercial use.
- Phenoxyethanol used in our cleaners has been created to mimic the identical characteristics of the natural source.
- Phenoxyethanol preserves without releasing formaldehydes found in a lot of preservatives on the market today.
- The product is used in pharmaceuticals and vaccines demonstrating its safety inside the human body.
- It also has a long history of being used in premium cosmetics demonstrating its safety on the skin.
What we mean by "Natural"
Our definition of the term “natural” is consistent with the definition proffered in Hawley’s Condensed Chemical Dictionary 1997 Edition, i.e. “…a substance or mixture that occurs in nature; the opposite of synthetic…” More practically, when developing the line we looked for raw materials that are either plant based or mineral as opposed to those that originate with refined petrochemicals.
The base surfactants we utilize are plant based glucosides, the primary solvent we utilize is a specially denatured ethyl alcohol denatured with eucalyptus oil, the sole viscosity improver is a cellulose based thickener, the mineral scouring/abrasive agent we use is a calcined alumina, the mineral wax we use is a montan wax, and our fragrances are all plant based and are compliant with IFRA Class 10 standards for natural fragrances.
The only deviation (for the time being anyway) from “natural” chemicals is our choice of preservative. We continue to evaluate other natural components for preservatives and will remove the last synthetic component from our formulations when we find a natural alternative that is stable and does not affect product performance.
